Off Sale

With five bands! Mammoth bacchanalian activist bands from France and Chicago, a superb Second Line band direct from New Orleans, an all-female phalanx of thrashing samba drummers, and NYC's finest conveyors of Balkan brass mayhem!

Last year’s cathartic HONK! NYC @ WFMU show at Monty Hall is the stuff of legend, declared by many to be the greatest event they’ve ever experienced in the short but storied history of WFMU’s live music space. A half-dozen brass and street bands from around the country and around the world made merry mayhem, honking and squonking and cavorting their way to our hearts, on stage and in the audience. This year, you can be there too!
So don't miss out, join us for HONK! NYC at WFMU’s Monty Hall, just a ten-minute PATH subway ride from World Trade Center or 10 minutes from the Holland Tunnel, for an over-the-top international activist brass band
performance spectacle. Marching band music like you've never imagined, plus off-kilter dance routines, twisted baton-twirling, absurdist acrobatics, hysterical histrionics, and high school marching formations from an alternate universe!

And if last year wasn’t good enough,we’re sweetening the musical pot for the second edition!

Yes, there will be lots more of the costumed carnivalesque twisted marching band mayhem we witnessed last year and will experience again this year thanks to Chicago’s uproarious Environmental Encroachment and the equally over-the-top Les Vilains Chicot from France

But - this year's HONK! NYC @ WFMU show also spotlights some of the world's great brass band traditions - from New Orleans second line to Balkan brass to Brazilian samba drumming!

Classic and contemporary New Orleans second line direct from NOLA with the marvelous New Creations Brass Band ;

Brazilian samba carnival drum-line c/o the pulverizing all-female Batala NYC

and rousing Balkan style brass band music by the rousing Raya Brass Band

So don't miss the fun this time around - join us for HONK! NYC @ WFMU for a night of non-stop musical mirth and mayhem!

More about the HONK! Phenomenon:

Across the country and around the world, a new type of street band is
emerging. Acoustic and mobile, borrowing repertoire and inspiration
from a diverse set of folk music traditions New Orleans second line
brass bands, European Klezmer, Balkan and Romani music, Brazilian Afro
Bloc and Frevo traditions, as well as the passion and spirit of Mardi
Gras and Carnival these "honkers" all share a commitment to several
core principles. Metaphorically speaking, they honk their horns for
the same reasons motorists honk theirs: to arouse fellow travelers, to
warn of danger, to celebrate milestones, and to just plain have fun.
