JOE FRANK - Somewhere Out There
JOE FRANK - Somewhere Out There
directed by D.P. Carlson

A feature-length film that explores the life of enigmatic audio artist Joe Frank (1939–2018), whose career on radio and online spanned four decades. Frank's idiosyncratic, intimate radio shows were innovative, abstract, surreal, funny, and disturbing. Joe, whose programs aired often on WFMU over the years, made radio come alive in a riveting way. His monologues veered between thought-provoking meditations on the human condition and absurd scenarios that bordered on the outrageous. Joe could enlighten listeners and offend them in alternate sentences.

The film features dozens of interviews with Joe's friends, actors, engineers and close associates. These recollections are woven together with excerpts from Joe's radio shows, revealing his art, creative process, and personal life. The film stars Joe Frank, Harry Shearer, Ira Glass, David Cross, Grace Zabriskie, Alexander Payne, Larry Block, Debi Mae West, Larry Josephson, Arthur Miller, David Rapkin, and Lester Nafzger among others.
